Friday, May 9, 2008, 11:40 AM - Friday Meetings
FRIDAY NIGHT (5/9/2008): We will all gather together to talk and enjoy refreshments between 6:30 and 6:45, and at about 6:45, we will quiet our hearts, and prepare ourselves to worship God, and learn more about His plan for our lives.
ABORTION: A serious tragedy in our own country and around the world is the high rate of abortion, of killing unborn infants, that takes place in many hospitals and clinics in the United States. Millions of lives have been lost, often for the sake of another's convenience, and at the hands of faceless corporations. But many of the legal and political issues surrounding this crisis are complex. Being pro-choice is not the same as being pro-abortion, so is it acceptable to allow women the choice in this matter, even if they choose the wrong one?
Also, illegal abortions are often far less safe or sanitary, and can result in deeper suffering both for the child and for the woman, and a higher rate of death for the woman. There are also other complications, such as whether abortion would be justified in the cases of rape, incest, serious deformity, or to save the life of the mother.
Dr. Sullivan will be helping us sort out these complex issues, and guiding us through how we should think about abortion, about abortion policy and legislation, and about what we can and should do as Christians to consider and confront this exceptionally serious problem facing our nation and world. Dennis M. Sullivan received his M.D. from Case Western Reserve, and M.A. in Bioethics from Trinity Graduate School in Deerfield IL. He is a professor at Cederville University in biology, specializing in bioethics, with extensive medical-missionary service in Haiti and Africa. His daughter, Julie Sullivan, is a part of CGSA.
TIME AND PLACE: Our meetings are at 6:30 pm in the Royer Student Activity Center. You can find it on the campus map at www.osu.edu/map/ Royer is located next to Jones Graduate Tower. Go into the building through the left of the two front entrances. At the top of the steps you will see a room to your right. That's where we'll be.
After the meeting, we will go out to a restaurant chosen from a poll in Yahoo groups, and revealed at the beginning of the meeting. To join this group, so that you can vote, or for more information about CGSA and its activities this quarter, please go to http://www.osu-cgsa.org/

THIS FRIDAY AT CGSA:
FRIDAY NIGHT (4/11/2008): We will all gather together to talk and enjoy refreshments between 6:30 and 6:45, and at about 6:45, we will quiet our hearts, and prepare ourselves to worship God, and learn more about His plan for our lives.
CHRISTIANS WHO DISAGREE POLITICALLY: All of us in CGSA, whether we can vote or not, are given a unique political voice, an ability and freedom to express different ideas about how our country should be run. Some of us feel very strongly about these issues, as well we should; the shape of our Country, the expression of our freedoms, even our freedom to practice our faith, and our economic well being depend on the political and economic perspectives and ideals of the leaders we support and may vote for. But Ephesians 4:3-5 speaks about the importance of our unity, that we are "one body", united by "one faith, one baptism, and one God". How should we relate with fellow Christians who disagree with us on these very important issues?
To help guide us through this, but by word and by example, are Jack Etheridge and Drew Campbell.
One is a democrat, the other a republican. Both have been active in their respective parties, as well as in the community, Drew being coordinator of the Vineyard Church of Columbus Legal Clinic, providing pro bono legal services to the poor and indigent in Central Ohio. And both of these gentlemen are friends, and Christian brothers.
TIME AND PLACE: Our meetings are at 6:30 pm in the Royer Student Activity Center. You can find it on the campus map at www.osu.edu/map/ Royer is located next to Jones Graduate Tower. SEEING ORANGE: A big thanks to all those who wore t-shirts during "Seeing Orange". I have already heard reactions from friends both in and out of CGSA. It was harrowing to see with my own eyes how many people were wearing orange, and thinking that each person represented thousands of orphans surviving now in Africa, because of the AIDS epidemic. Thanks as well to all of you who were praying for the success of the event, and conversion of hearts to charity.

Friday, April 4, 2008, 10:07 AM - Friday Meetings
The quarter is certainly tumbling along, and classes, for those who still take classes, seem to be picking up the pace. After a hectic week, relaxation, as much as is possible, is key. We invite you to a Friday of refreshment, worship, fellowship, and thoughtful encounters with issues of the faith.
THIS FRIDAY AT CGSA:
FRIDAY NIGHT (04/04/2008): We will all gather together to talk and enjoy refreshments between 6:30 and 6:45, and at about 6:45, we will quiet our hearts, and prepare ourselves to worship God, and learn more about His plan for our lives.
POLITICAL/ECONOMIC SYSTEMS: Luke 16:9-12 says: "I say unto you, Make to yourselves friends of the mammon of unrighteousness; that, when ye fail, they may receive you into everlasting habitations. He that is faithful in that which is least is faithful also in much: and he that is unjust in the least is unjust also in much. If therefore ye have not been faithful in the unrighteous mammon, who will commit to your trust the true riches? And if ye have not been faithful in that which is another man's, who shall give you that which is your own?" Money is important, not only to the things on earth, but the things in Heaven.
Our management of money is a spiritual matter.
Does the Bible favor a certain political or economic system? Should Christians be socialist, libertarian, republican? How should we sort through these issues?
Mark Longbrake has been a long-time member of CGSA. He studied Economics at the Ohio State University, and currently is Visiting Professor of Economics at Kenyon College. Mark is a dynamic speaker, and a talented guitar player. He and his wife Erin live in Columbus.
TIME AND PLACE: Our meetings are at 6:30 pm in the Royer Student Activity Center. You can find it on the campus map at www.osu.edu/map/. Royer is located next to Jones Graduate Tower. Go into the building through the left of the two front entrances. At the top of the steps you will see a room to your right. That's where we'll be.

SEEING ORANGE: On April 9-10, InterVarsity Christian Fellowship (IVCF) is asking 5% of the campus to wear bright orange T-Shirts with the word "ORPHAN" on the front. The statistic represents the 1 in 20 children in sub-Saharan Africa who have been orphaned by AIDS. To order a T-Shirt for yourself, or a friend, you can visit intervarsityosu.org/doyouseeorange (and can also find more information about other events there). Or you can come to CGSA this Friday and purchase as many T-Shirts you need from an IVCF member at the meeting.
The cost is $5 per shirt, the shirts were not made at a sweatshop, and the shirts will be raising almost no money. There will also be announcements about other events at the meeting, and in future e-mails.
OUTREACH/MISSIONS/CHARITY: Being involved politically is important, but besides the single votes we will cast, and the activism for candidates/issues we may be involved in, it is exceptionally important, as Christians, to be involved in our local communities, especially the parts of our communities that are struggling, and desperately need our presence and involvement. In this vein, Chris Orban, our director of Outreach and Missions, has created a wonderful webpage for CGSA, showing anyone interested (and everyone should be interested) what they can do to help out in Weinland Park and in other areas, and where they can go to do so. The URL is http://www.osu-cgsa.org/index.php?fusea ... ortunities
and it can be found from the main website, listed above.

We will all gather together to talk and enjoy refreshments between 6:30 and 6:45, and at about 6:45, we will quiet our hearts, and prepare ourselves to worship God, and learn more about His plan for our lives.
THINKING, SPEAKING, & ACTING POLITICALLY: Our own Bob Trube will be introducing the theme of Politics with examining in general the way in which Christians do and should talk, think, and act politically. We are supposed to share the Truth in love, but what about when political perspectives conflict? How involved should we be in politics, and what does Scripture say about the proper way to interact with the State in terms of activism and on the issues? This introduction will help frame and direct these questions.
Bob Trube has been with Graduate & Faculty Ministries, and has been mentor, adviser, spiritual leader, and friend to CGSA since its inception. Bob holds an A.B. in Psychology from Youngstown State University and an M.A. in Biblical Studies from Ashland Theological Seminary, where he has also served as adjunct faculty.
Bob, lives in Columbus, Ohio, with his wife, Marilyn, and son, Ben.
