I. THIS FRIDAY MEETING: THE MAKING OF MANY BOOKS: CHRISTIANITY AND LITERARY STUDIES
I-A. MEETING LAYOUT
I-B. MEETING LOCATION - ROYER STUDENT CENTER
II. FRIDAY, MAY 1: A CHRISTIAN BIOLOGIST'S PERSPECTIVE ON THE STEM CELL DEBATE
---------

I. This Friday Meeting: "The Making of Many Books: Christianity and Literary Studies" John Acker, graduate student working on his PhD in English Literature, will discuss with us where Christianity possibly fits in possibly the most secular and anti-Christian discipline today, and how the lack of even a fair consideration of Christianity may be resulting in loss of good work and valuable insights.

I-A. The Meetings begin around 6:30 PM on Fridays. Typically there are people here before, and we talk and catch up with each other's weeks and lives until about 6:50 PM. At that time, we come together, the meeting is introduced, and we worship by singing songs. Then we open in prayer, and the speaker is introduced. After she or he is done talking (typically 8:00 to 8:30 PM) there are announcements, another song of worship, and then a closing prayer. Then all who wish will go out to eat at a place chosen by a poll (sign up to the Yahoo group on osu-cgsa.org to see the polls in the future). The poll decision will be announced at the meeting.

I-B. Location: Our meetings are at 6:30 pm in the Royer Student Activity Center. You can find it on the campus map at www.osu.edu/map/ Royer is located next to Jones Graduate Tower. Go into the building through the left of the two front entrances. At the top of the steps you will see a room to your right. That's where we'll be.

II. May 1: "A Christian biologist's perspective on the stem cell debate" Jona Hilario, a graduate student in the Biology department, will be speaking on the topic of bioethics, specifically how one Christian approaches the issue of Stem Cell research. This is a very relevant topic especially for our times, and is surrounded by difficult ethical questions: can a Christian ethically support stem cell research? Can a Christian do research with embryonic stem cells, or use results directly obtained through embryonic stem-cell research? We invite you to join us in discussing these and other issues.

I. THIS FRIDAY MEETING: CHRISTIANITY AND COSMOLOGY
I-A. MEETING LAYOUT

II. FRIDAY, APRIL 24: THE MAKING OF MANY BOOKS: CHRISTIANITY AND LITERARY STUDIES
---------

I. This Friday Meeting: "Christianity and Cosmology" Cosmology carries with it the idea of both the ornamentation and structure of the Universe. Is it orthodox for a Christian to expect that science can tell us anything about the origins of the Universe? Should the well-evidenced results of Cosmology change our understanding of the Bible? What is the place and dignity of man in a universe so vast that we comprise but a speck?

Please welcome as our speaker our own Chris Orban, a graduate student involved in the Center for Cosmology and Astro-Particle Physics (CCAPP). He works on the large structure of the universe, and statistics of white dwarfs. And he's an excellent guitar player and music leader.

Thursday, March 12, 2009, 01:18 PM - Friday Meetings
This is the last meeting of the quarter; time passes very quickly. We invite you to take a break from the stress that crops up at the end of a term, and to join us for a time of music, fellowship, prayer, and peanut butter (see Service Opportunities) this Friday.

I. THIS FRIDAY MEETING: THE FOUR LAST THINGS
I-A. MEETING LAYOUT
I-B. MEETING LOCATION - ROYER STUDENT CENTER
II. SERVICE OPPORTUNITIES IN COLUMBUS
---------

I. This Friday Meeting: Four Last Things: 'Can you have Heaven without Hell and Judgment?' How can a good God send people to suffer eternally? What is the purpose of punishment, for God, and for humanity? We will be concentrating on Matthew 22:1-14 and Revelation 19:1-9.

Our speaker will be Paul Rimmer. Paul is a fourth year graduate student in Physics here at OSU.

II. Service Opportunities.

Student Christian Fellowship's PB4HAITI Drive is going to be starting April 14th and will go through April 30. The students have set a modest goal of 6,000 18oz jars of creamy peanut butter! That's a lot.
Last year we collected 1,022 jars, with 222 of those donated by Jacob's Porch. So, as you can see the students think we should go big or go home.

Why collect Peanut Butter and why that much?!
+ Haiti is where the Peanut Butter is going. Likely you know that the
life/ political situation there is terrible.
+ Lifeline Christian Mission, based here in Columbus, does a lot of
mission work in Haiti and some other Caribbean countries.
+ They have 5,000+ students in schools there and run various
humanitarian programs, including nutrition programs.
+ Peanut butter has lots of protein and vitamins that the Haitians
need and it does not need to be refrigerated.
+ Every year they have a goal of collecting 75,000 jars of Peanut
Butter, but often only hit 40,000 jars.
+ 6,000 jars is about 1 month worth of the PB they would like to collect.

How does SCF need you to help?
6,000 jars is obviously larger than SCF's 30+ students. To reach the goal we need lots of help- from undergrads, from grad students, from faculty. Mostly we need you tell students about this. You will receive boxes (and flyers) from us for collecting the peanut butter- each box holds 40 jars. We'd love for various small groups to take and fill a box. We will pick them up from you when they are full.
The goal is 150 boxes full of peanut butter.

When: April 14-30
Goal: 6,000 18oz jars
For: Lifeline Christian Mission's work in Haiti
