All of us have some vision of what a life well-lived looks like. Most likely, consciously or not, we are living our lives toward that vision. This week at CGSA we will consider the question of what the gospel has to do with the way we steward the life God has given us.
Our speaker this week is Doug Hartman, the director of Urban Connections. Here is Doug's description of what he hopes to do in his presentation:
". . .I am thinking about imagining and dreaming together
about what it means to follow Jesus in our world, with a particular
concern and focus on the poor. My answer to that question would be a
creative, passionate, and whole-Life stewardship or discipleship. I also
want to think about the interconnectedness of social, cultural,
environmental, and theological issues around these topics. Sound fun?"
If that sounds like fun to you (or interesting or challenging), we hope you will join us this Friday night at the Christian Graduate Student Alliance.
Time and Place. We meet in the North Activity Room of the Royer Activity Center, next to Jones Graduate Tower at 6:30 pm on Fridays. Parking is available on Curl Drive for parking permit holders or in the Arps Garage on College Drive. We finish around 8 pm and go out for dinner afterwards at an inexpensive local restaurant--all are welcome to join us and rides are available.
Coming Events.
May 27 Jones Tower Summer Bash. CGSA and particularly the Jones Tower Study are helping out but we would welcome anyone to come. The party is during the afternoon and we particularly need clean-up help at 5 pm. Contact Paul Rimmer at saul.tentmaker@gmail.com if you can help.
June 2 End of the Year Party. Each year we celebrate graduations as well as the end of another year of grad school. Look for details in email this coming week.

He has a monthly newsletter, Urban Perspectives, which is available via email subscription. Online versions of past newsletters are also available. For all who are interested in further resources on Friday's talk or CGSA's partnerships in Weinland Park, this is a treasure trove of good, biblical thinking.
Have a good, long weekend!

Conversation, Cuisine, and Sleep! What a great combination of some of the best things in life. This Friday, the Christian Graduate Student Alliance hosts our quarterly Conversation & Cuisine. We start with dinner brought in by CGSA regulars--lots of good food which always stimulates conversation around tables! Then Dr. Mark Splaingard, a sleep researcher at Children's Hospital will speak on "Sleep Strategies for Maximum Performance." With end-of-the-quarter presentations, papers, and exams, there will be lots of great tips that you will have a chance to put into practice right away.
Time and Place. We will meet in our usual, lovely (!) facilities in the Royer Activity Center, located on north campus next to Jones Graduate Tower. Parking is available along Curl Drive if you have a campus parking permit or in the Arps Garage on College Drive. Dinner begins at 6:30 pm. Those bringing food should arrive at least 15 minutes ahead.
Future Attractions:
May 26: The Gospel and the City
June 2: Our end of the year bash--stay tuned for further details!
Looking for roommates? Several people have used the CGSA Yahoo Group as an easy way to let others know about either housing you have available or that you are looking for a roommate. You still get to decide whether those who contact you would be good roommates, but this can be a good way to find other Christian grads to room with. To join the Yahoo group go to CGSA Contact Us Link and click on the "join our email list at Yahoo! Groups" link at the bottom of the page.
Featured Link The National Sleep Foundation has a website with loads of useful information about sleep including a fun animation about learning how to sleep with the Doze family!
Remember Psalm 127:2 and get some good sleep this weekend!

--Life has no meaning--it's just a game.
--You are the only one who cares about you.
--No story is universally true.
--There is no such thing as truth except what you created for yourself.
--Every claim to truth is a power play.
--Therefore, everything must be mistrusted (or deconstructed).
--There is no order--all is random.
--You only go around once, so do it with gusto.
(taken from Marva J. Dawn, Is It a Lost Cause? (Grand Rapids: Eerdmans, 1997), p. 23)
You probably knows someone who would agree with some or most of these statements. Perhaps you do. If so, you already understand some of the most crucial ideas of the post-modern outlook that increasingly is shaping our culture.
How then should we think of post-modernism as a Christian? Is this a good thing or a bad thing? A threat to or an opportunity for the gospel? This week, we will be considering "postmodernism and the gospel." Our speaker is Jeff Cannell, pastor of the Central Vineyard in Clintonville. Jeff loves ministry with post-modern people and thinks we can too! To read more about him visit Jeff Cannell's Blogger Profile.
Time and Place. We meet in the North Activity Room of Royer Activity Center, located next to Jones Tower. CGSA Prayer begins at 5:30 pm and our regular meeting at 6:30. Everyone is welcome to join us afterward (8-ish) for dinner at a local eatery.
Conversation and Cuisine Next Week! Most quarters we have a special evening of food, an interesting presentation, and conversation. On May 19, Mark Splaingard, M.D. a sleep specialist at Children's Hospital will speak on "Sleep Strategies for Maximum Performance." This is a good night to bring friends--food and a very practical topic! Regulars at CGSA can sign up this week to bring food, or just bring something next week if you are able to come this Friday.
