Friday, 05/23 @ CGSA
Friday, May 23, 2008, 08:22 AM - Friday Meetings
This is the last regular meeting of CGSA, and it is very near the end of the quarter. It feels as though it's gone by so quickly! We welcome you to a Friday of worship, prayer, and sharing how best we can live holistically as graduate students, active citizens, and authentic Christians.

THIS FRIDAY AT CGSA:

FRIDAY NIGHT (5/23/2008): We will all gather together to talk and enjoy refreshments between 6:30 and 6:45, and at about 6:45, we will quiet our hearts, and prepare ourselves to worship God, and learn more about His plan for our lives.

FOREIGN POLICY/TERRORISM: Terrorism is a very difficult topic, especially when coupled with foreign policy. How is terrorism even defined, and how is it separated from legitimate military action? Even if you haven't given much thought to a specific definition, most people know terrorism when they see it, from the evil assault on our nation in 9/11, to the bombing of trains in Madrid (11-M), IRA activity in Northern Ireland, and many actions by many groups before and after these events. How should the US construct a coherent and honorable foreign policy in light of attacks such as these, and with a mind to the fact that there are nations that would like nothing better than to see us destroyed or conquered? Should we be involved with the Middle East at all, and if so, how? What is legitimate action toward terrorists we capture, and what is legitimate treatment of the many unknown civilians who travel into our country every day?

Bryan Cole will be leading the discussion on this issue. Bryan is a member of CGSA, and a graduate student in political science.

TIME AND PLACE: Our meetings are at 6:30 pm in the Royer Student Activity Center. You can find it on the campus map at www.osu.edu/map/ Royer is located next to Jones Graduate Tower. Go into the building through the left of the two front entrances. At the top of the steps you will see a room to your right. That's where we'll be.

After the meeting, we will go out to a restaurant chosen from a poll in Yahoo groups, and revealed at the beginning of the meeting. To join this group, so that you can vote, or for more information about CGSA and its activities this quarter, please go to http://www.osu-cgsa.org/

END-OF-YEAR PARTY, SATURDAY MAY 31: At Weinland Park we will be celebrating the end of the school year. There will be food and games, centered around a Science Fiction theme; you are encouraged to dress up as your favorite Sci-Fi character. There will also be the passing of the pineapple, and a recognition of those who are graduating, either with the PhD, or on into the next phase of their program.

Friday, 05/16 @ CGSA
Wednesday, May 14, 2008, 09:15 AM - Friday Meetings

IMMIGRATION: When we think of Immigration, many of us think of Mexicans sneaking across the boarder into California to ``steal'' the very worst of our jobs. As it turns out, and as most of us know (but maybe don't often think about), not all immigration, and not even most immigration (compare DHS LPR_FR_2007 with an extrapolation of the Pew Hispanic Center work to find that about 750,000 illegal immigrants are entering this country every year, and over a million persons became legal permanent residents of the US in 2007), is illegal. Not all of it is what is quaintly termed ``unskilled labor''. Indeed, a few members of CGSA are immigrants or non-permanent residents.

A panel of immigrants and non-permanent residents, members of CGSA, will be speaking on immigration, their thoughts on the US policies toward legal and illegal immigration, and how to view this issue as an informed Christian.
