Thursday, October 23, 2008, 03:53 PM - Friday Meetings
We invite you to join with us in a time of worship, fellowship, and learning about and praying with the Scriptures this Friday at CGSA.
There is also an apple picking this Saturday, a wonderful way to relax during the weekend, and to spend time with friends, and a good way to get cheap and tasty apples.
I. THIS FRIDAY MEETING: LISTENING PRAYER
I-A. MEETING LAYOUT
I-B. MEETING LOCATION - ROYER STUDENT CENTER
II. NEXT FRIDAY, OCTOBER 31: PUMPKIN CARVING
---------
I. This Friday Meeting: "Listening Prayer". Often when we think about prayer, the first thing that comes to our minds is talking to God.
Prayer life is often so full of talking that we can forget what may be the more important part of the conversation: listening. A portion of prayer takes place in the silence and humble reception of our hearts to God's will in our lives. Father Kevin Lutz will be talking with us about the role of listening and silence in prayer.
Father Kevin Lutz is the pastor at Holy Family Catholic Church ( www.holyfamilycolumbus.org ) and founder and curator of the Jubilee Museum, for which he was recognized by Pope John Paul II, and appointed to the Pontifical Commission for the Cultural Heritage of the Catholic Church in 2000.
I-A. The Meetings begin around 6:30 PM on Fridays. Typically there are people here before, and we talk and catch up with each other's weeks and lives until about 6:50 PM. At that time, we come together, the meeting is introduced, and we worship by singing songs. Then we open in prayer, and the speaker is introduced. After she or he is done talking (typically 8:00 to 8:30 PM) there are announcements, another song of worship, and then a closing prayer. Then all who wish will go out to eat at a place chosen by a poll (sign up to the Yahoo group on osu-cgsa.org to see the polls in the future). The poll decision will be announced at the meeting.
I-B. Location: Our meetings are at 6:30 pm in the Royer Student Activity Center. You can find it on the campus map at www.osu.edu/map/ Royer is located next to Jones Graduate Tower. Go into the building through the left of the two front entrances. At the top of the steps you will see a room to your right. That's where we'll be.
II. October 31, Pumpkin Carving: Thanks to the hospitality of long-time CGSA mentors and supporters Gary and Peggy Nielsen, we will be going to their home to carve pumpkins, eat very good food (including scrumptious soups and tasty caramel apples), and hang out.
Costumes are strongly encouraged. Their home (542 Blenheim Rd.
Columbus, OH 43214) is a 10-15 drive from campus, so rides will be available (please let us know if you are going, and also if you can offer rides to others). More information (including directions) will be given at the Friday meeting, and in the next e-mail.

I. This Friday Meeting: "Lectio Divina" We are going to look this meeting at a traditional Christian practice of prayer through reading the Bible, systemized by the Carthusian monks, and carried through to many Christian traditions. This is one of the practical ways we can devote ourselves in prayer, and offers a way of reading the Bible different from the conventional Bible study, and a four-fold way of prayer directly from God's written word. Brenda Colijn will be speaking on this topic. Her information can be found at http://personal.ashland.edu/bcolijn/

Apples are $10 (10lbs) or $16 (20lbs) and Asian pears will be available at $1/lb. After we pick, we will have a pie baking party with games and of course, pie! Hope you all can make it! (If you are willing to drive or need a ride, please email Jona Nichols at jona.d.hilario@gmail.com.)

Friday, October 10, 2008, 09:33 AM - Friday Meetings
The retreat last week was an amazing and very spiritually fulfilling time, and making friends with Graduate Students from University of Cincinnati, praying with them, laughing with them, was enriching. But the quarter returned in full force. This is a busy time, especially for first year graduate students. This is also a very important time to reach out and make friends and become part of the community, and to make sure Christ is center of your life. We warmly invite you to CGSA this Friday.

I. This Friday Meeting: "Models of Prayer". The best place to start with prayer, or any other spiritual practice, is in the Scriptures.
What does the Bible tell us about prayer? About how to pray? What freedoms does it allow? Are there wrong ways to pray? Debbie Splaingard will be addressing what Scripture has to say about prayer.
Debbie Splaingard earned her Undergraduate degree at University of Virginia and her Graduate degree at Marquette, both in Communication.
She has been a med school grant writer, personnel consultant, church staff member, wife of 30 years, mom, grandmother. Currently, Debby works part time doing research in neurosciences at Children's Hospital and volunteers with InterVarsity grad and faculty ministry, working primarily with a fellowship of grad and professional student women.

II. October 17, Lectio Divina: Often we cannot see where we are going unless we know where we have been. Otherwise, we can spend a great deal of time walking in circles and worse still learning very little in the process. Lectio Divina is an ancient prayer common in many western Christian traditions, and involves prayer through reading the Scriptures. We will be learning how to practice Lectio Divina, and some of the blessings involved in this practice.
III. October 18, Apple Picking: Apple Picking will take place at Lynd's Apple Farm on October 18. We will all meet at the back (North
Side) of Jones Tower to go enjoy a wonderful time picking and eating apples. Hopefully, apple pie will follow. More information on this event to come soon.

Friday, September 26, 2008, 11:24 AM - Friday Meetings
Our topic for this quarter will be prayer, how to pray, what to pray, when to pray, who should/can pray for us, and why we should pray. Prayer is so central to the Christian life - it is the way we talk with God our Father. Bob Trube will be introducing this topic, and all are welcome to attend.
Bob Trube is a full time veteran Intervarsity Staff mentor, and friend and mentor for many years to this group, and for a shorter time to me personally. He has spoken for CGSA many times, helped with organization, and centered our mission in prayer and focus on God. He is currently one of the organizers for Following Christ 2008 this Winter in Chicago( http://www.intervarsity.org/gfm/ to find out more and to register if interested).
Then all who wish normally go out to eat at a place chosen by a poll (sign up to the Yahoo group on osu-cgsa.org to see the polls in the future).
This Meeting, a few things will be different: between the introduction to the meeting and the worship songs, there will be an ice breaker, and before announcements, a chance for all our small groups to be introduced. Small groups are an important and substantial way many people get involved with CGSA. Finally, after the meeting, Bob will close us in prayer, and we will be eating at Royer. Food will be graciously provided by members of Bob Trube's church, Smoky Row Brethren Church, and we are all guests to enjoy the food, and to stay and get to know each other better.
Location: Our meetings are at 6:30 pm in the Royer Student Activity Center. You can find it on the campus map at www.osu.edu/map/ Royer is located next to Jones Graduate Tower.
